Guidelines tips
From the FY2027 Official Guidelines. ICD10Ref adds no rules of its own.
G89 is for pain specified as acute, chronic, post-thoracotomy, postprocedural or neoplasm-related. It is not assigned when the underlying diagnosis is known, unless the encounter is for pain control.
There is no time frame for when pain becomes chronic. Central pain syndrome and chronic pain syndrome are different from chronic pain and are coded only when the provider documents them.
